eWBSS Lewis-Frazier Preview: Lewis praised Frazier & called him an inspiration

24th, March 2020

Tournament 3 seed Lennox Lewis (41-2-1, 32 KOs) faces Joe Frazier (32-4-1, 27 KOs) on Tuesday, March 24 at 5pm (GMT) in the second of the quarter-finals of the ‘eWBSS Heavyweight Legends’ tournament simulated on EA Sports ‘Fight Night Champion’.

And what a match-up it is.

British legend Lewis is a three-time world heavyweight champion, undisputed at the turn of the century and 1988 Summer Olympics gold medalist at super-heavyweight. He has one of the most impressive resumes in boxing with prolific wins over Vitali Klitschko, Mike Tyson, and Evander Holyfield. ‘The Lion’  practically ate a division whole with some of the best fighters in boxing history. A heavyweight of great technical skill and terrific punching power.

‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier fought during another golden era for heavyweight boxing, forging an epic rivalry with Muhammad Ali which produced a monumental trilogy including ‘The Fight of the Century’ in 1971 when he beat Muhammad Ali and the culminating ‘Thrilla in Manila’ in 1975 when Ali exacted revenge over 14 vicious rounds of war.

The American reigned as the undisputed heavyweight champion from 1970 to 1973, and as an amateur, he won a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1964 Summer Olympics.

Lewis paid tribute to Frazier, when the icon lost his battle with cancer at the age of 67 in October, 2011. An in-depth praise showing the respect among the heavyweight legends across generations.

“There is some great history in the past, him and Muhammad Ali,” Lewis told Sky Sports News. “Without Joe Frazier, you would not get the ‘Thrilla in Manila’ and other great fights that he had.

“Joe Frazier had great heart, he showed it in his fighting ability. He was the first man to really show that ducking style so when Muhammad Ali threw a punch he would always be ducking.

“Muhammad Ali described him as a man that when he was in the ring with him you could almost cheat death.

“He had a unique style, but he had that great left hook and could take you out. He was a big inspiration for me. He was a remarkable man and very few boxers can follow in his footsteps.”

The entire ‘eWBSS Heavyweight Legends’ tournament will be live-streamed on the World Boxing Super Series Facebook page at 5pm (GMT) every day.

The tournament is created to provide some much-needed relief and entertainment for fight fans around the world during these testing times.
