Prograis: It was destiny to face Taylor in Ali Trophy Final

27th, May 2019

WBC Diamond & WBA Champion Regis Prograis knew he would face IBF Champion & WBC Silver Champion Josh Taylor in the Super-Lightweight Final of the World Boxing Super Series.

Prograis and Taylor met each other last year in July in Moscow at the Season 2 Draft Gala before the Cruiserweight Final between Aleksandr Usyk and Murat Gassiev where the No.1 super-lightweight in the world would sit ringside with his manager Sam Katkovski and trainer Bobby Benton.

“I knew it was going to happen,” said Prograis. “Since we saw each other in Moscow, it felt like it was going to happen. Since then, I said me and him we are the two best fighters in the division.

“He just had to get past his opponents. We both got past our opponents and I just felt it was destiny and it was going to happen anyways,” said Prograis.

Being ringside and among the 26,000 spectators in attendance at the Cruiserweight Final animated the ‘Rougarou’ to chase the same experience as Usyk got, being wrapped in belts and holding the Ali Trophy.

“To be around the final in Moscow in Russia was very inspiring,” said Prograis.

“To be in the final for the Ali Trophy is huge. We are fighting for the Ali Trophy and Ali is a legend. He fought the best of the best and I’ve always said I want to fight the best of the best. And here we are.

“I have fought a former champion and a world champion to reach the final and I will beat another champion in the final. I can’t wait to lift the trophy to show who is the legitimate best!”

The Super-Lightweight Final of the World Boxing Super Series, between the tournament No. 1 seed Prograis and 2 seed Taylor, will take place in the fall. Tournament organiser, Comosa AG, will announce date and venue in due course.

The WBSS returns on June 15 with a sensational doubleheader at the Arena Riga in Riga, Latvia: Mairis Briedis vs Krzysztof Glowacki and Yunier Dorticos vs Andrew Tabiti for spots in the cruiserweight final.
