Aleksandr Usyk vs Mairis Briedis, the first Cruiserweight Semi of Season 1 of the quest for the Ali Trophy, is a WBSS classic shown live tonight at 7pm (UK) on World Boxing Super Series Facebook and YouTube.

The bout between the WBO and WBC champion taking place on 27 January 2018 in Riga was a Fight of the Year contender and won the ‘Sports Event of the Year’ award by Riga City Council. It was a superb exhibition of boxing by both fighters in front of a sold-out Arena Riga in Latvia’s capital. A drama that swung back and forth throughout every action-packed round for a place in the WBSS Cruiserweight Final.

A few days before the semi-final Kalle Sauerland, WBSS Chief Boxing Officer, said at the press conference:

“We have a fight between two world champions, two of the very, very best athletes fighting each other. We have a great arena on Saturday night. We have a country that seems to be captured by boxing, captured by the name of the greatest of all, Muhammad Ali, and the Muhammad Ali Trophy.

“I think that a legacy is at stake. It’s not about the fight, it’s not about titles, it’s not about the money, these guys are training years and years and years for a night like this and I think that Saturday night is about legacy. You want to step up, you want to get to the Hall of Fame, Saturday night is the time to do it.”
