Mairis Briedis vs Mike ‘The Rebel’ Perez was the third Cruiserweight Quarter-Final of Season 1 of the quest for the Ali Trophy, and it is shown live tonight at 7pm (UK) on World Boxing Super Series Facebook and YouTube.

In the build-up to the clash on 30 September 2017 the focus was on Briedis fighting in his hometown Riga, and a rumour about Perez fighting to make weight.

“It’s a great honour for me and for Latvia to have such a big fight and tournament in our country,” said Briedis, the WBC champ at the fight week press conference.

“I’m looking forward to showing that Latvia is not only a country with singers and dancers but also some world-class boxing. There is some pressure on my shoulders fighting in front of a sold-out arena, but I’m sure I can handle it.”

Mike Perez, the Ireland based Cuban, who spent the vast majority of his career fighting at heavyweight, said: “I’m ready to fight, I can’t wait for Saturday night! It will definitely be a good and exciting fight.”

Responding to a rumour forwarded by a Latvian journalist that he struggled to make weight, ‘The Rebel’ said with a serious face: “I’m here, what makes you think I’m not going to fight! You will have to see at the weigh-in on Friday …”

Shadeed Suluki, Perez’ trainer, said: “Rumour? We have had a very tight camp, so I don’t know where you have got that rumour from. The only guys who have seen Mike on the scales is the team, and I know who’s part of this team. So wherever you got that rumour they told you a lie.”

A few days later Perez brought and ate a cake at scaling to prove his point: “I did that to show that I did not have any problems with making the weight. Some journalist asked at the press conference about a rumour saying that I was struggling to make weight.

“But I have not been struggling. Actually, I have been eating cake all week. Latvia has great cake.

“I’m motivated. My kids motivate me the most. I predict I win. I can only see myself winning this fight. I do not care how I will win. One round or 12 rounds, I’ll get the win!”

The 2017-18 Season 1 of the WBSS consisted of two weight classes, Cruiserweight and Super-Middleweight, questing for the Muhammad Ali Trophy, and featured battles that became classics of the sport.

In the coming weeks not only the fights, but also videos, photos and interviews from a spectacular season will resurface on WBSS platforms to entertain fight fans all over the world during these challenging times.
